Cave Light by Elinor Portnoy

The main inspiration for Elinor Portnoy’s piece is an area dotted with hundreds of historical, man-made caves in her homeland of Israel. These enormous caves, carved from chalk all around the region, were originally made for worship and storage by the early Romans, and later used as hideouts. By exploring the architectural features hand-carved in the caves, that combine both everyday living and worship, she aims to bring elements that create spiritual features into our everyday habitat spaces and examine the connection that mankind has always had with stone.

Cave Light is a candle holder for the evening time when the light fades away and we welcome the night.
