French Plait Tassel by Aimee Betts

French Plait Tassel reflects on the evening ritual of combing hair in preparation for bedtime. The tassel is made from a multitude of loose threads, which when gathered together take on the flexible qualities of hair. The threads were prepared into bunches by Betts using an umbrella swift and organised into groups of colour and thread types. The bunches were then interlaced together using a French plait technique and worked at different times. These threads required constant combing throughout the making process, which demanded great concentration and patience for the material.

The final tassel provokes a tactile emotional response, encouraging us to relax and slow down. The colours were inspired by an evening sunset in South East London during March this year.
