The inspiration for Steven James Will’s piece originated with ginger jars – porcelain pots filled with candied ginger for export from China, which became fashionable table adornments in the West from the 17th century. One can imagine passing the jar around a table after dinner, filled with digestive sweetmeats. The foraged materials used to make the pot ensure it is highly personal and root it firmly in the artist’s home landscape.
