The quiet dedication of John Lobb shoemakers
A Film By Steven Fisher
At John Lobb shoemakers in St James’s, there are 190 separate steps to creating the perfect shoe. Steven Fisher captures the sights and sounds of their labours…
It takes a team of no less than nine different specialist craftsmen (one of whom is John Lobb’s grandson, John Lobb Junior) and up to 12 months to create each pair of John Lobb shoes. Eight pieces of leather are used to make the upper of each shoe, while the wooden last records the shape of the client’s foot forever. Removing the last is possibly the hardest part of the process, taking up to a week of working on it for a few hours each day.
